The University of Sheffield sought to undertake an extensive refurbishment of the six-storey building known as No,9 Mappin Street to accommodate the Departments of Journalism and Economics.

The move was to be part of a strategic objective to improve the estates space and operational efficiency.

Newell’s Projects undertook a full strip out of the building, returning the 1990’s building back to its original shell. This leaving the foundation to refurbish the building into an excellent modern learning environment.

Works included:

Partition walls, full M&E package, glazed screens, joinery package of doors, skirting, architraves, Staff kitchens, full Décor package, flooring throughout, grid ceilings, new wc /washroom install to every floor, new stair coverings, Bespoke reception counters, an impressive bespoke ground floor social space data island.

The results of this 24 wk Project took the existing building of uninspired spaces to the 21st Century producing a State-of-the-art broadcast studio, multimedia newsrooms, breakout spaces, new office accommodation, high quality teaching spaces and seminar rooms with upgraded services, light levels, and state of the art ventilation system reacting on person count in the room at any one time.

The hub of all this was the ground floor 180-square-metre extensive social space for students, with sofas, low tables, Wi-Fi, computer facilities, information screens, and vending machines. Enabling students to meet up with other students, use the computers, and catch up with the latest news and developments in economics.

Newell’s Projects during the construction process supported and worked alongside the University in its commitment and initiative in reducing and managing its environmental impact by recycling all waste materials.
